A defining highlight of my graduate career involved conducting research at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg, MD. There, I used ultrafast (femtosecond-timescale) time-resolved infrared spectrometer to probe the dynamics of organometallic photochromes undergoing linkage isomerization. This intense focus on molecular mechanics and electronic behavior shapes how I analyze complex chemical problems—and how I teach them—to this day.

It is easy to feel overwhelmed by the complexity, but Organic Chemistry is entirely grounded in fundamental physical and electronic laws. Once you understand why electrons move the way they do, seemingly impossible problems suddenly become logical and approachable.
