I am the perfect guy to answer this.
I used to hate mathematics back in school. But everything changed when a new teacher was hired
She helped everyone with whatever concepts they doubted, even if it was from lower classes. I started liking mathematics then. I used to spend upto an hour daily after school with her just to learn the concepts better.
The “mantra” that she gave me was “Question anything and everything, find answers for those questions and then questions the answers”.
It sounded like mumble to me back then but it really is the best advice ever. Especially for a logical subject like mathematics.
The key is help the kids understand every concept that they are learning in depth. When I teach my younger sister a concept, she knows every detail there is to know about that concept and that's what makes her understand the questions better.
So according to me, teach them to question amd be ready to answer.
