I teach creative writing using the Story Workshop method of writing instruction, whereby students learn the major capacities needed for effective writing: seeing in the mind, voice, listening, creative problem solving, reading, and sense of audience. I hold a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing, am the author of three novels and more than fifty nonfiction books for the library market. Likewise, I’m an award-winning fiction writer and journalist. From 1996 I taught college courses in creative writing (Introduction to Fiction Writing, Fiction Writing I, and Fiction Writing II), literature (Critical Reading & Writing for Fiction Writers I), specialty writing (Story & Journal), and composition (Rhetoric & Composition I & II) at various higher education institutions. I have extensive experience teaching teenagers, who I think bring great energy to the classroom, as well as their creative minds and learning spirit.
My teaching methodology moves students toward the writing process during each class through exercises used to draw out their seeing-in-the-mind capacity. These include reading published fiction (both the masters and student work), recall and comment on the readings to discover the writers’ effective process in getting story on the page, brainstorming activities, and in-class rewriting sessions.
As regarding literature courses, I focus on Deep Reading, paying special attention to character development, representation, and action/reaction (including, especially, dialogue); further, the ethnocentric aspects of American-European short stories & novels offer critical perspective and introspection, including (when appropriate) a historical perspective. Such focus shows that I am ideally suited to the American-European Studies program you have in place.
Each of the colleges at which I have taught draw students from a diverse socio-economic and ethnic population in and around their respective metropolitan areas, plus national and international students. These pupils enter my classroom holding a broad range of cognitive and writing abilities. This calls for a sensitivity on my part to language usage, grammatical abilities, and range of educational backgrounds and learning aptitudes that always keep me on my toes, listening for the positive breakthroughs in learning that come from both strong and less strong students.
