About Mark

I completed the Maths 3 course at Rhodes University and went on to teach Maths at Selborne College and Stirling High School for many years before deciding to move to private lessons where i believe i can offer more specialized instruction for specific individuals and groups in order to help them succeed.

About the lesson

As a Maths Tutor I want my students to succeed in math. I believe that in order to achieve this the students need to enjoy Maths. By being intentional and using creative approaches in my instruction such as making jokes that help learners to remember important maths concepts; i believe I can get students excited about math.

I have high expectations of all my students and express these expectations to my students. I do not believe students should be tutored just before an important test or exam; but that they need to commit to a process of improving by continually attending lessons and by wanting to improve.

I often begin my lessons by looking at learners previous tests or going through test papers with my students and seeing where they make mistakes and why they make these mistakes. The first step in improvement is for me to understand their mistakes and to help them understand their misconceptions and rectify them for themselves.

Lastly I promote meaningful math education not just memorizing formulas and procedures. I like to present a broad topic, review various strategies for solving a problem, and then elicit a formula or idea from my students rather than starting with the formula. This creates a stronger conceptual understanding and mental connections with the material for the student.

However, after years of teaching i am very aware of how different every student is and how differently each student learns and therefore I have learnt to adapt my approach accordingly for each learner and for this reason I have no set methodology that can work with every learner but i learn with my students as i help them to progress in their own understanding and at their own pace.
