About Billy

I've been studying and teaching mathematics for most of my adult life. After earning an A1 in Leaving Certificate Mathematics, I completed a degree in Mathematics at University College Cork before going on to earn a PhD from Columbia University in New York. I'm currently completing a Master's degree in Machine Learning, where mathematics continues to play a central role.

Alongside my studies, I've accumulated over ten years of tutoring experience. I spent three years teaching Junior and Leaving Certificate students in Cork and seven years tutoring university-level logic and algebra while at Columbia. Working with students of different ages and abilities has taught me that everyone can improve in mathematics with the right explanation, plenty of practice, and a supportive learning environment.

Whether you're aiming for top grades, trying to pass an important exam, or simply looking to feel more confident with math, I aim to make lessons challenging, engaging, and enjoyable. There's nothing more rewarding than seeing a student go from finding a topic frustrating to solving difficult problems with confidence.

About the lesson

Mathematics isn't learned by memorizing solutions. It's learned by developing the ability to solve problems you've never seen before. My goal is to help students build that ability by developing a solid understanding of the underlying ideas, alongside the confidence to apply them independently.

Lessons are typically 60 minutes and are tailored to each student's needs. We begin by working through examples together, discussing not only how to solve a problem but also why the method works. I then gradually hand responsibility over to the student through carefully scaffolded questions, offering guidance where needed while encouraging independent thinking. This approach builds both competence and confidence, preparing students to tackle unfamiliar exam questions rather than simply repeat familiar techniques.

I have over 10 years of tutoring experience. I spent three years tutoring Junior and Leaving Certificate mathematics in Cork before moving to New York, where I taught university-level logic and algebra for seven years while completing my PhD at Columbia University. I teach students of all ages and backgrounds, from Junior Cycle and Leaving Certificate to university mathematics and adult learners returning to the subject.
