About Jennifer

Hello! My name is Jennifer and I am a MA student at the University of Chicago. Currently, I am studying philosophy, religion, and political/cultural theory. I am excited to help middle and high school students who are grappling with difficult new concepts and subject matter in English/literature, history, philosophy, and more. I also can assist high school students who are applying to college! Having been accepted with scholarships to some of the top universities in the country, including Harvard, Duke, NYU, and the University of Chicago, I know how to improve a student's chances of admission and make their application stand out. I look forward to working with you!

Growing up, my younger brother often had a difficult time in classes. My parents figured that, given my propensity for academic success, I could tutor him. Throughout my middle and high school years, I regularly tutored my younger brother. He developed from a C average student to attending his choice of California universities with scholarship. Thus began my love of teaching.

In high school, I ran study sessions for fellow students. Effectively, I taught groups of five for hours at a time to prepare them for AP exams. Most notably, I lead tutoring sessions in AP Biology; that year, nearly every student in our class passed the AP exam.

A couple of years ago, I was accepted into the AmeriCorps Teach For America program. Unfortunately, I wound up having to decline the offer. I have therefore been on a break from tutoring, excited to get back on the horse.

I have a BA in Critical Theory from the University of Puget Sound. While in attendance at Puget Sound, I was a member of the Phi Eta Sigma, Phi Kappa Phi, Mortar Board, and Phi Beta Kappa honor societies. I was also a regular on the Dean's List. I graduated Magna Cum Laude with Honors in my major and a 3.88 GPA, never receiving below an A- in a course. I am now at the University of Chicago Divinity School, which is one of the world's top institutions for the academic study of religion.

When starting with a new student, I will first go over their goals with them. Once we have made a list of some tangible goals, I will ask the student to show me their past writing and exams. After assessing their past work, we will create a tutoring plan together to target their weaknesses and exacerbate their strengths. Every student is different, and I like to include the student as much as possible in the creation of the tutor plan. Doing so ensures that the way a student learns best is woven intimately into the fabric of our lesson plans!

I have worked with a wide range of students, from those who are incredibly ambitious to those who detest school, from straight-A students looking to maintain that GPA to students who have never received a grade above a C, and so on. I have worked with students who have developmental disabilities, including spatial relations issues. Additionally, I have helped students as young as 11 and as old as 21.

I would advise students to be picky. If you don't like a tutor'a style, or even if you just don't feel comfortable with them, that's okay! You should take the time to find the person who fits best with your learning style.

I was recently accepted into the University of Chicago. When I was completing my applications, I realized that I wanted to do something completely new for my writing sample. I thought over my topic, and wrote a 20+ page paper in four days. As I was writing, ideas and connections flew through my mind. It was incredibly fun and satisfying to feel my understanding of the materials grow deeper. I want to show other students how to have fun with their materials. As a bonus, that essay not only got me into UC, but the Dean of my school reached out to tell me that he admired my work. Quite the cherry on top!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Before reaching out to a tutor or teacher, I would strongly recommend a student consider some of the following questions:

-What kind of learner are you? Visual, interactive, verbal, something else? A combination? Let your tutor know!

-What are your goals for tutoring? Why?

-Why do YOU believe you are struggling with a certain subject?

Taking the time to think through some of these basic questions can help facilitate a better learning environment between tutor and tutored!
