About Rory

I am a First Class MMath graduate from the University of Exeter, currently working in statistics and software development. I also attended Exeter Maths School and have always had a passion for mathematics.

My own educational journey has not been without challenges. As someone with dyslexia and dyspraxia, I understand first-hand that academic success is not always straightforward and that different students learn in different ways.

One of the reasons I enjoy tutoring is that I genuinely find it rewarding to help students achieve things they did not think were possible. Whether that means helping a student secure a top grade or supporting someone towards a pass they never thought they could achieve, I am invested in their success.

I particularly enjoy working with young people and helping them build confidence in their mathematical ability. In my experience, confidence is often just as important as subject knowledge. Many students already have the potential to succeed; they simply need the right support and encouragement.

Some students need stretching and challenging, while others need help rebuilding confidence after finding maths difficult. I adapt my approach to the individual student and aim to create an environment where they feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and developing their understanding without fear of getting things wrong.

About the lesson

My teaching approach is student-led, as I believe every student learns differently and there is no single method that works for everyone. As someone with dyslexia and dyspraxia, I have first-hand experience of neurodiversity and understand the importance of adapting explanations and learning strategies to suit different ways of thinking.

Some students benefit from a structured programme working systematically through the syllabus, while others prefer a more flexible approach focused on topics they have found challenging in school. I tailor lessons to the individual, ensuring that each student receives the support and challenge they need.

I have worked with students across a wide range of abilities, from highly gifted mathematicians seeking additional challenge to those who find mathematics difficult and lack confidence in the subject. Having attended Exeter Maths School myself, I understand the demands placed on students aiming for top academic performance, while also recognising the barriers that can make mathematics feel inaccessible.

My focus is on developing genuine understanding and problem-solving skills rather than memorisation alone. I also place a strong emphasis on building confidence and resilience, as these are often just as important as subject knowledge in achieving long-term success. My aim is to create a supportive environment in which students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and ultimately achieving their individual goals.
