About John S
I have taught in urban, suburban, and rural environments. In my last teaching job, I was the entire mathematics department. Every day for almost a decade, I taught Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Precalc/Trig, Applied Math, and AP Calculus. I ended up writing my own curriculum, so I really got to learn the intimate details of the subject matter. These insights were very important in helping me break down the material into ways that a student could better understand things.

My first meeting with a student is free of charge. We see if things can work out including things like technology compatibility. To work together online I use Zoom along with an interactive app called Scribble. Scribble can be used with an iPad or similar device. An alternative is a writing tablet connected to a Mac or PC. I tend to teach using guided practice. I give examples of the topic at hand and then have the student work problems or give feedback to check for understanding. If in person, I like to use an actual whiteboard. If online, the student and I use an interactive whiteboard. This is much better than simply having me lecture the student. I also try to explain, whenever possible, the logic behind what is needed to solve a problem or explain a concept. For example, in order to prove the triangle sum theorem one must know about parallel lines and the angle properties associated with the parallel lines (usually the Alternate Interior Angles Theorem). In short, I try to prove what we use before we use it. A tutoring session is based on what the student is trying to accomplish. If it is a specific topic (e.g. factoring polynomials) I would provide a more structured approach with numerous examples and practice problems. If it is a session going over specific questions that the student has, I would ask to see the questions ahead of time, if possible, and then work through the problem with the student. I feel some of the things that set me apart are the results I was able to get in the classroom. On the AP Calculus Exams my students had a 93% pass rate, with over 80% of my students scoring a 4 or 5. On the state-administered Math SAT, my students were always near the top of the state. There was no secret to our success: we practiced to the best of our ability the types of things we expected to see on these tests well ahead of time. The key to success is preparation.

He will always find a way to explain a problem to a student. He is always available and willing to take the time to teach. He is very knowledgeable and personable. His lessons are engaging, and full of enthusiasm. He is always there for students and wants to see everyone of them succeed. Students who are willing to put in the work will be amazed at the amount of potential they have.
Hayworth is a fabulous math teacher! I am a mother of 5 boys. My boys thrived with Mr. Hayworth. He relates and teaches in a way that the students understand and retain the concepts. He is a trustworthy man who will follow through 100%! You will not find a better Math Teacher.
John has been tutoring my daughter for many months and is absolutely a godsend. He not only knows what he is doing, knows how to motivate, but he actually makes sure she knows the material instead of wasting her time for a paycheck. Absolutely the best!
